Comportamento de corte e cópula do predador Supputius cincticeps (Stal) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) em laboratório Anais da SEB
Mendonça,Fernando A. C.; Barreto,Marliton R.; Assis Jr.,Sebastião; Marsaro Jr.,Alberto L..
The mating behavior of the predator Supputius cincticeps (Stal) was investigated in the laboratory. Courtship and copulation descriptions were based on direct observations of 40 virgin couples. Results showed that males begun courtship by moving the antennae and walking toward females, immediately after they noticed their presence. Then, males mounted females and tried to copulate. In many cases, males were rejected by females. When copulation was successful, males placed the edeagus into females, turned 180º and assumed a position opposite to the female.

Courtship and mating of Scorpiops luridus Zhu Lourenço & Qi, 2005 (Scorpiones: Euscorpiidae) from Xizang province, China J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Jiao,GB; Zhu,MS.
In the current work, the courtship and mating of Scorpiops luridus Zhu Lourenço & Qi, 2005 (Euscorpiidae) from Xizang province (Tibet), China, were studied for the first time in the laboratory. Most of the mating behaviors in Scorpiops luridus are not remarkably different from those exhibited by other scorpions. However, for the first time a male pulling a female with its chelicerae to rapidly accomplish the sperm uptake was observed. Additionally, the sexual stinging behavior displayed by the male occurred in the initial stage, not during the promenade stage as previously described in several scorpion species. Through observation and analysis, we speculate that venom injection during sexual stinging is selective, possibly relying on the status...

Cues for territory choice in two tropical dragonflies Neotropical Entomology
Marco Jr.,Paulo de; Resende,Daniela C..
Classifications in mate systems of Odonata are generally based in the male ability to control the female access to oviposition resources. In this paper we discuss the criteria for male territory selection in the dragonflies Perithemis mooma Kirby and Orthemis discolor (Burmeister) (Libellulidae), in Viçosa, Brazil, controlling the availability of perches and aquatic vegetation. P. mooma males defended territories with vegetation and thus their choice was probably related to the oviposition resource of the females. O. discolor males preferred sites with tall perches, possibly because their choice was related to a mate-seeking resource. Interactions with another libellulid more active and aggressive, Planiplax phoenicura (Ris), changed the preference of O....

Dark septate endophytic pleosporalean genera from semiarid areas Naturalis
Knapp, D.G.; Kovács, G.M.; Zajta, E.; Groenwald, J.Z.; Crous, P.W..
Dark septate endophytes (DSE) are distributed worldwide as root-colonising fungi, and frequent in environments with strong abiotic stress. DSE is not a taxon, but constitutes numerous fungal taxa belonging to several orders of Ascomycota. In this study we investigate three unidentified DSE lineages belonging to Pleosporales that were found previously in semiarid sandy grasslands. For molecular phylogenetic studies seven loci (ITS, partial 18S nrRNA, 28S nrRNA, actin, calmodulin, transcription-elongation factor 1-α and ß-tubulin genes) were amplified and sequenced. Based on morphology and the resulting molecular phylogeny these isolates were found to represent three novel genera within the Pleosporales, namely Aquilomyces, Flavomyces and Darksidea, with eight...

Does mating interfere in the biological characteristics of a population of Trichogramma pretiosum? Anais da ABC (AABC)
PRATISSOLI,DIRCEU; KLOSS,THIAGO G.; ZINGER,FERNANDO D.; CARVALHO,JOSÉ R. DE; VIANNA,ULYSSES R.; PAES,JOÃO P.P..
Trichogramma spp. are parasitoids used in the regulation of insect populations that can cause economic damage. In order to ensure good performance, understanding some of their biological characteristics is essential. The objective of this study is to evaluate whether mating interferes with the biological characteristics of a population of Trichogramma pretiosum collected in the field. In all experiments, groups of mated and unmated females were used. We also verified any interference from mating on the biological characteristics of the offspring. We found that mating can alter the parasitism and longevity of genitor females, in addition to changing longevity among the descendants, but once parasitized, the eggs develop normally, showing similar emergence...

El comportamiento acústico de Fenestra bohlsii Giglio-Tos (Orthoptera: Acrididae: Gomphocerinae) Neotropical Entomology
Lorier,Estrellita; Clemente,Maria E; García,Maria D; Presa,Juan J.
The acoustic behavior of Fenestra bohlsii Giglio-Tos is described for the first time. The sounds and behaviors were observed and registered in captivity. The signals were digitized with the Sound-Blaster AWE64 Gold program and analysed with the Avisoft SAS Lab Pro 30 PC for MS Windows software. Seven different types of sounds are described as produced by males: spontaneous song (also used during the courtship), two different types of courtship song, assault song, tapping associated to the courtship, interaction between males and fly crackling. For each one, the characteristic oscillograms and frequency spectra are given. Sounds are produced by different mechanisms: femoro-tegminal stridulation, typical for Gomphocerinae, fly crackling, hind tarsi tapping...

Frequency of spermatophore production and regeneration in the males of Tityus (Atreus) magnimanus Pocock, 1897 (Scorpiones, Buthidae) J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Ross,LK.
The frequency of spermatophore production and the amount of time between matings for laboratory-reared males of Tityus (Atreus) magnimanus to regenerate spermatophores were examined. Males attain sexual maturity at the fifth or sixth instar (after a period of 137 to 155 days) and can produce initial spermatophores shortly after maturation. After mating, males can regenerate spermatophores within a single 24-hour period and remate. The present contribution represents the first report on an aspect of reproductive biology in this species and is part of a continuing study of the life history and post-embryonic development of Tityus (Atreus) magnimanus.

Genital Sensory Stimulation Shifts Estradiol Intraoviductal Signaling from Nongenomic to Genomic Pathways, Independently from Prolactin Surges Biol. Res.
PEÑARROJA-MATUTAN0,C; PARADA-BUSTAMANTE,A; ORIHUELA,P A; RÍOS,M; VELASQUEZ,LUIS A; CROXATTO,H B.
Estradiol (E2) accelerates oviductal egg transport through nongenomic pathways involving oviductal protein phosphorylation in non-mated rats, and through genomic pathways in mated rats. Here we investigated the ability of cervico-vaginal stimulation (CVS) to switch the mode of action of E2 in the absence of other male-associated components. Pro-estrous rats were subjected to CVS with a glass rod and 12 hours later were injected subcutaneously with E2 and intrabursally with the RNA synthesis inhibitor Actinomycin D or the protein phosphorylation inhibitor H-89. The number of eggs in the oviduct, assessed 24 h later, showed that Actinomycin D, but not H-89 blocked the E2-induced egg transport acceleration. This clearly indicates that CVS alone, without other...

Mating behavior and female accompaniment in the whiptail lizard Cnemidophorus ocellifer (Squamata, Teiidae) in the Caatinga region of northeastern Brazil Biota Neotropica
Ribeiro,Leonardo Barros; Gogliath,Melissa; Sales,Raul Fernandes Dantas de; Freire,Eliza Maria Xavier.
We report here a set of observations on mating behavior and female accompaniment by the whiptail lizard Cnemidophorus ocellifer in an area of Caatinga (xerophilous open forests) in the state of Rio Grande do Norte, northeastern Brazil. We observed a stationary male lizard performing repeated vibratory movements of the pelvis and tail base upon the sandy soil. Since that male was in front of a burrow in which a female of the same species was sheltered, we hypothesize that this behavior may be part of a courtship display. We continued the observation and later, when the female emerged from the burrow, the male climbed on her and the copulation occurred. The incident of accompaniment observed was characterized by one male continuously accompanying a female...

Metanotal gland of the genus Eidmanacris (Grylloidea, Phalangopsidae): taxonomic importance Iheringia, Sér. Zool.
Prado,Rogilene Aparecida; Fontanetti,Carmem S..
The present study compares the metanotal gland through scanning electron microscopy in five species of Eidmanacris: E. corumbatai Garcia, 1998, E. alboannulata (Piza, 1960), E. dissimilis Desutter-Grandcolas, 1995, E. larvaeformis (Chopard, 1938) and Eidmanacris sp. The general external configuration of the gland was determined by the presence of two median projections with apical opening and a cluster of bristles just above these projections. Although there is a general pattern for this gland, each species has its own pattern, which can be defined mainly by the arrangement of the bristles and the position of the median projections. Our results suggest the taxonomical importance of these structures, which should be better analyzed when describing species...

Precopulatory mate guarding and mating in Tachidius discipes (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) Naturalis
Dürbaum, Johannes.
Precopulatory mate guarding and mating behaviour of Tachidius discipes Giesbrecht, 1881, has been analysed using a video camera mounted on a microscope. Males preferably accompany fourth or fifth stage female copepodids during precopulatory mate guarding; only rarely are third copopodid stages guarded. Rare cases of males clasping juvenile males are also known. Males are active during mate guarding and constantly change the site of attachment of their antennules. This behaviour may ensure continued association of the adult male with the juvenile copepodid when the latter moults during the mate guarding phase. The final moult of the female, once observed only, lasts only 2 minutes. Copulation immediately follows but is preceded by the male’s control of the...

Reproductive behavior of the mangrove crab Ucides cordatus (Crustacea; Brachyura; Ucididae) BABT
Linhares,Jussiara Candeira Spíndola; Silva,José Roberto Feitosa.
The aim of the present work was to study the reproductive behavior of the mangrove crab (Ucides cordatus) in the estuary of the Igaraçú River (Piauí, Brazil). Courtship and mating were observed in December 2007 and in January-March 2009. The most frequently observed reproductive behavior was the transference of eggs onto the abdomen of the female. Some disputes between males and some copulations were observed. The males mated with more than one female each night and all mating activity occurred at night. The establishment of a closed season coinciding with the mating season represented an effective strategy for the preservation of the species when the socioeconomic situation of the community of gatherers was taken into account.

The influence of sex ratio on the reproduction of pirarucu, Arapaima gigas, in captivity Acta Amazonica
LIMA,Adriana Ferreira.
ABSTRACT Because sex ratio in the broodstock can influence the reproductive behaviour of a species, the influence of sex ratio on the reproductive success of pirarucu, Arapaima gigas, in captivity was assessed. Pirarucu breeders were stocked in 0.10-0.13 ha earthen ponds at three sex ratios in quadruplicate: one male to one female (1M1F); one male to two females (1M2F); and two males to one female (2M1F). Eight spawning events occurred, seven of them with the 1M1F sex ratio, which was the most successful of the three tested sex ratios.

Winged ants (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) presence in twigs on the leaf litter of Atlantic Forest Biota Neotropica
Fernandes,Tae Tanaami; Silva,Rogério R.; Souza-Campana,Débora Rodrigues de; Silva,Otávio Guilherme Morais da; Morini,Maria Santina de Castro.
Abstract: In the leaf litter, ants have various nesting resources available, such as live or dead trunks, twigs, leaves, fruits and seeds. On the twigs, there are adults and immature individuals, but also the queen and winged. The production of wings requires time and energy from the colony. The objective of this study was to investigate the presence of winged in ant colonies in twigs on the leaf litter. Our prediction is that the richness and abundance of winged in twigs are the greatest in rainy months. We collected all twigs with ants in 552 plots with 16 m2, totaling 8,832 m2 of leaf litter, in areas located in the Brazilian Atlantic Domain. We compared the species richness and the number of colonies with and without winged, as well as the number of...
